The Challenge
In Nigeria, access to clean water remains a significant challenge for millions of people. Despite progress in recent years, 70% of the population still lacks access to safe drinking water. In rural areas, the situation is even more dire, with 39% of households lacking basic water supply. This lack of access has severe consequences for public health, economic development, and social equity.
The Impact on Women and Girls
Women and girls bear the brunt of the water crisis in Nigeria. They are often responsible for collecting water from distant sources, which can be time-consuming and dangerous. This burden can limit their educational opportunities and economic prospects. Additionally, the lack of access to sanitation facilities can lead to increased health risks for women and girls.
Government Initiatives
The Nigerian government has taken steps to address the water crisis, including the construction of over 2,300 additional water points and 6,546 sanitation compartments and hygiene facilities across the country. These initiatives are a positive step forward, but more needs to be done to ensure that all Nigerians have access to clean water and sanitation.
